Stevie wants Cup focus

GOD Steven Gerrard is looking for us to push on the cup competions this season after our sluggish start in the Premiership.

Stevie said: “Because of the disappointing start we have had in the Premiership, if we’re realistic we have got to try even harder in the cups now,”

“The Champions League would be a big consolation.

“I want to win the Champions League again. The team want to do it again,” said Gerrard who inspired Liverpool to victory in the 2005 final.

“It’s easy to live off the memory of that success two seasons ago - to milk it and keep thinking about it.

“But if you dwell on what you have achieved that’s when you lose your hunger.

“It would be a terrific achievement, not just for me, but the whole squad, to become European champions again.

“We have had a taste of it before, so it gives you that extra incentive in these Champions League games to try to progress.”

Alonso: Sissoko is a big loss

Xabi Alonso has admitted that the injury to team-mate Momo Sissoko is a massive blow to the club but believes they have the personnel to deal with the loss.

“We’ll have to wait and see how long he’s out, but it doesn’t look very good,” said Alonso.

“If he’s out, it’s clear we’ll have to change something in the team. There are times when we’ve played without him before and we’ve still managed to get good results.

“But now we will have to think of a new system and I’m sure Rafa will do something.

“Stevie and I have played together in the middle a lot. Sometimes it’s worked really well and other times we’ve had some problems.

“We know we need to work together to find the balance which is important for the team.

“Stevie has massive qualities. He has an ability to get into the box and we have to make sure he’s still able to do that because that’s where he works so well.

“If the team is compact and we work as hard and show the same form we did last season, I’m sure the identity of the players in the position isn’t important. It will be harder without Momo, but we can make it work.”

Momo could be out for three months

Momo Sissoko could be out of action for some time after he suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder against Birmingham in the Carling Cup match today.

Reds manager Rafa Benitez said: “We feel it is serious. We cross our fingers now and wait,”

“Really we need all the players in our squad, especially Momo Sissoko because he gives us a lot of energy.”
